More Information about the Abolishing of the Temporary Work Visa (457)
The Council of International Students Australia has heard a lot of international students concern regarding the removal of the 457 Visa. We would like the international student community to be aware that we are waiting for further clarification on how the removal of the 457 visa and the new Temporary Skill Shortage visa will implicate international students before we give a statement.
Currently, we know the government plans to:
- abolishing the Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457) and replacing it with a new Temporary Skill Shortage visa, that includes a short term stream and a medium term stream, in March 2018.
- Significant immediate changes to the skilled occupations lists:
o 216 occupations have been removed.
o 59 caveats to occupations have been introduced.
- Sharpening the scope of eligibility requirements, and improving integrity for employer sponsored temporary and permanent skilled visas; and
- Maintenance of concessions for regional Australia.
Please note, these implementations will impact a number of other visa applications including the Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa and Training (subclass 407) visa. Please find more information on the visas website at http://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Work/457-abolition-replacement.
We have also attached a fact sheet to clear up more information.
