It can be stressful to come to a new country but there is a supportive LGBTQ+ community in Australia that is fighting for the equal rights and representation.
Whether you are an ally or part of the community, understanding everything about sexuality and gender identity can be tough. Twenty 10 has a great comic on A quick guide to Sexual Orientation, Sex, and Gender Identity.
Still Discovering Yourself?
If you are still discovering yourself, there is a great community across Australia and you do not have to go through it alone. Many institutions have great support services and peer collectives to answer any questions you might have.
If you need help with sex, sexuality gender or trans questions, Reach Out has some great resources for dealing with LGBTIQ problems. Another great resource is Acon which focuses on LGBTI health. QLife is Australia’s first nationally-oriented counselling and referral service for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) people.
Even though Australia is a very accepting country, it is important to know that community and allies are very conscious about people wanting discretion and privacy.
Interested in Getting Involved?
Australia is always looking for volunteers to get involved in the LGTBQ+ community. Check to see if your institution has any clubs or societies you could get involved in or if there are any community groups. Check your local community to see how you can get involved in helping with activism or community engagement.
